A Tale of Two Cities is a historical novel written by Charles Dickens. Darnay, a French aristocrat, renounces his title and moves to England where he falls in love with Lucie Manette, the daughter of a French doctor who was imprisoned in the Bastille for 18 years. Carton, a drunken lawyer, also loves Lucie but knows that she will never love him back. When Darnay is arrested in France for his family's crimes, Carton comes up with a plan to save him by sacrificing himself.
